Thanks for the memories ... I think
It's well known that music has tremendous power to evoke memories. But I'm mystified by what I feel when I listen to Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, as I did tonight while working on the Freelance Gig. This album evokes memories so powerful it's almost painful to listen to ... and I can't figure out exactly what I'm remembering or where it's taking me back to. No other piece of music does that to me. Despite the fact that it's one of my favorite records, I don't listen to it very much for that reason. Normally, it's pretty easy for me to pin a song to a time in my life. With Brothers in Arms, it's just a generalized late-'80s angst ... or, not even angst, really, just something I can't quite put my finger on.
